trailer: The Gangster Squad

Emma Stone as Grace Faraday and Ryan Gosling as Sergeant Jerry Wooters.

I'm currently on vacation, and I know it's a bit much posting two movie trailers in a row, Ruben Fleischer's The Gangster Squad just looks too good (I had previously written about the movie here).  I think I'm equally as excited about the costume and set designs as I am about the story itself.

trailer: The Great Gatsby

Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan

The official trailer is out for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, to be released in December, and it looks visually stunning.  He never takes the traditional route with his films, so this should definitely be an interesting adaptation.

style inspiration: Kimbra

Kimbra Johnson in a retro photo shoot for Details Magazine.  Photo by Shaun Hartas.

I'm really liking New Zealand singer-songwriter Kimbra's music and look.  You probably know her most recently from her collaboration with Australian singer Gotye on his track "Somebody That I Used to Know"  (check out this awesome performance from KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, as well as her excellent mashup of Grizzly Bear and Tears for Fears).

The 22 year-old sites Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra as musical inspirations, but on the other end of the spectrum, is also very much into Nine Inch Nails and the Mars Volta.  Her music reflects a fusion a genres, as does her style, which can border on eclectic and is a bit of a mishmash between retro and modern.

portraits from words, by juan osborne

Find five of Lauren Bacall's movie titles within the picture.

Designer/architect/programmer Juan Osborne creates some rather interesting pieces featuring hidden words, quotes or titles within a portrait.  Here are a few of some classic stars that I love -- you can see more of Juan's work on his site.

so chic: The Belted Shirt Dress

The model wears a belted silk shirt dress by Michael Kors with an oversize runway watch and the Bedford bowling satchel.

I received Michael Kors' Summer Issue in the mail the other day and fell in love with the outfit above, which is so comfortable, chic and seventies-inspired.  The shirt dress look was popular in the late 1960s and '70s, as seen on Cybil Shepherd and others in a May 1969 issue of Glamour.

'50s inspired: Dree Hemingway in Dolce & Gabbana

Dree Hemingway at the Mulberry pool party at Coachella in Palm Springs.  Outfit from Dolce & Gabbana's S/S 2012 Collection.

With Coachella in full swing, I've seen a lot of notable outfits over the past couple of days -- but none really struck me quite as much as Dree Hemingway's perfectly summery Dolce & Gabbana number from their Spring/Summer 2012 collection, with the cropped top and fun chili pepper print.  She accessorized with a vintage purse and wedges by Isabel Marant.  It's a fresh update on a classic look, with its silhouette and bold prints, which the designers say was inspired by summertime in southern Italy in the 1950s.  Below are some similarly glamorous summer looks from some of my favorite actresses of the time.

classic glamour: Scarlett Johansson in Vogue

Scarlett Johansson wears a blush satin dress by Dolce & Gabbana in the May 2012 issue of Vogue.  Photos by Mario Testino.

Scarlett Johansson looks like an old Hollywood starlet in the May issue of Vogue and I think it's a great look for her.  Though I love the styling, I think they may have overly airbrushed the photos (is it just me, or is her Avengers co-star Mark Ruffalo barely recognizable in these?).

According to the interview, she'll be playing Janet Leigh in a film about the making of Hitchcock's classic 1960 film Psycho.  Not sure I'm convinced that she's the best choice, but should be interesting. You can read the full interview here.
